About Whole Health Charlotte
My inspiration for Whole Health Charlotte originates from my long-held appreciation for integrative medicine and my commitment to serving patients holistically. I believe that offering an evidence-based integrative approach allows the patient to be center focus. It also addresses all the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects that impact a person’s well-being. In doing so, I incorporate a unique blend of western, eastern and herbal medicine, Ayurveda, nutrition, and stress management techniques to promote optimal healing of the body and mind.
More about integrative medicine:
- Patient and practitioner are partners in the healing process.
- All factors that influence health, wellness and disease are taken into consideration including mind, spirit, and community as well as body.
- Appropriate use of both conventional and alternative methods facilitates the body's innate healing response.
- Effective interventions that are natural and less invasive should be used whenever possible.
- Integrative medicine neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically.
- Good medicine is based in good science. It is inquiry-driven and open to new paradigms.
- Alongside the concepts of treatment, the broader concepts of health promotion and the prevention of illness are paramount.
- Practitioners exemplify its principles and commit themselves to self-exploration and self-development.
About Me
MAUREEN SCOTT, MSN, ANP-BC, RYT
I first started my healthcare career as a registered nurse at the Cleveland Clinic. Later, I went on to receive my Nurse Practitioner’s degree. But after some time as a nurse practitioner, I decided to explore new areas of care, specifically yoga. Yoga profoundly changed my view on healing. It assisted me during my years of postpartum depression and served as an alternative to my prescribed medicine.
Because of my newfound appreciation for the practice and its benefits, I began to start teaching. I received my yoga teacher certification from Stephanie Keach through her 500 hour teacher training at her Asheville studio. While there, I garnered knowledge and respect for the wisdom of the body and the practice of Ayurveda. My training here inspired me to further my study into holistic medicine.
Beginning in 2015, I participated in Dr. Andrew Weil’s Integrative Medicine Fellowship Program through the University of Arizona-- a two year, 1,000 hour program which explored the intersectionality between Western and holistic medicine in treating patients most effectively. Based on my studies, I have started incorporating functional and integrative medicine principles into my regimen, as they care for the whole person-- mind, body, and spirit. In addition, I now specialize in treating depression and anxiety.
In 2017, I started Whole Health Charlotte because I want to spend more quality time with my patients than the typical 10-15 minute office visit. Traditional medical office visits inhibited the patient from fully expressing their concerns, causing a lack of thorough individualized attention. Instead, I like to consider all the aspects of my patients' lives-- spiritual practice, family, environment, upbringing, social networks, stress, career, nutrition, exercise and self-purpose. It is difficult to capture all these factions crucial to patient care in a traditional medical office visit.
Apart from my healthcare career, I am also a mother, wife, and animal-lover. I have lived in Charlotte since 1999. I volunteer at the Pink House at Carolina Breast Friends where I teach yoga. I am also a runner, student of yoga, and meditator.
